Share in a Combs holiday tradition

Posted by stevencombs on December 22, 2006

For the past four Christmas Eve’s, my daughter and I have tracked Santa with the help of NORAD. Its fun to see where he is at a given point in time and to hear the updates from the Norad folks. So be sure to join us this year, but remember, you have to be in bed before he reaches your home or he might pass you by!

MERRY CHRISTMAS from Combsing Through the Minutia

Let Google Earth help you track Santa this Christmas!

Posted by stevencombs on December 20, 2006

Here’s a great application for Google Earth, the free download from Google. Google has created both a game and a Santa tracking system to let all boys and girls find goodies each day leading up to Christmas. It looks like a lot of fun and I’m just sorry that I have posted this a little late for you to enjoy. But go download Google Earth and then visit the link below to play along.

Naval War College pulls its web site after hacking

Posted by stevencombs on November 30, 2006

Now this is bad. If the Navy can’t protect their War College web site, the government is in serious need of some security experts.

Posted by stevencombs on November 29, 2006

WikipediaDownload the Wikipedia CD distribution and put on a USB drive. Then give to a child. Distribution comprises “over 2500 hand-picked educational articles aimed at helping schools enhance their curriculum.”

Much better than the Encyclopedia Brittanica at a much better price.

Digital Marionette

Posted by stevencombs on November 23, 2006

Some folks may not know, but the Apple MacBook Pro computers contain sensors in them that detect whether a the laptop has been dropped and when this detection occurs, it locks the hard drive into a safe position to better protect the data.  While the laptop itself might not survive the drop, the intention is that at least the data would be protected. A great feature that has been exploited to provide some entertainment value.  Here’s one example that I thought was very creative.

The ultimate Periodic Table of the Elements

Posted by stevencombs on November 18, 2006

Wish this had been available when I was in high school.  I might have gotten a much better grade in chemistry.  Heck, it might have helped me get a grade period in high school.  Not my best subject.

Google keeps on innovating with Click-to-call feature

Posted by stevencombs on November 17, 2006

According to Google, here’s how it works:

Search for a business, like a hardware store, on Google Maps, and click the ‘call’ link next to its phone number. Then, enter your phone number and click ‘Connect For free.’ Google calls your phone number and automatically connects you to the hardware store.

Now that sounds like a very useful feature.  Be sure to check it out the next time you are looking for a local business and need to make a call.

Some of the best online games…and no downloads!

Posted by stevencombs on October 28, 2006

I was quite surprised by the quality of these free flash multiplayer online games. One of my favorites was the simple Tank Ball game. Give it a shot (pun intended) and see if it doesn’t burn a couple minutes of your day with some mindless moving and shooting fun.

Firefox 2 Released

Posted by stevencombs on October 24, 2006

Finally, a web browser other than Safari that can spell check on the fly. I’ve had to use Safari for quite some time to manage my wiki and blogs because I have a tendency to mistype and misspell.  Now I can finally go back to my favorite web browser, Firefox, and get all the great extensions I have been missing. I’m posting this using Firefox 2 and along with the Performancing blogging extension.
